WHAT IS A ENTERPRISE DATA CENTER?

Enterprise data centers are typically owned and operated by companies who choose sole use of their own facility to host their ICT systems and services.

 

Many enterprises have sites spread across multiple locations potentially within office buildings or purpose built and part of a larger campus or business site. Often they have been designed to host specific ICT equipment or services and supporting systems such as telecommunications and data storage systems.

 

Ranging in size from small rooms housing a dozen racks with small power capacity up to multi-room environments with thousands of racks and megawatts of power.


Despite the size, enterprise data centers are complexed environments with a multitude of different technologies and services that provide space, power, cooling and network infrastructure to ensure availability and reliability of the ICT Systems used by the company and their customers.

 

The management of the data center facilities is determined by the owner and their business strategy; it is common for a variety of external third-party outsourced providers and also internal teams to be assigned to support the facility, building services, ICT environment and services required to ensure standards and compliance with legislation and corporate policies is not compromised.

No matter the scale and size of a facility, an Enterprise has defined a need to enable a centralized management of the ICT systems. Their aim is to ensure there is a reliable means to support the business growth and maintain compliance in regard to legislation, compliance, corporate policies and standards.


The risk however, is that multiple teams supporting the enterprise data center working for different companies exposes a disjointed management style with team working in silos using disparate systems and processes, and in most cases these teams are located in different places - some onsite and other at remote locations.
