IT Equipment Energy Efficiency for Servers (ITEEsv)

(Equivalent to EN 50600-4-4)

Description: Maximum peak server performance divided by maximum power consumption. It focuses on identifying how effectively servers can utilize the electrical power they consume in terms of their computational output.

Purpose: Provides a standardized approach to evaluate the energy efficiency of servers. It helps data center operators to understand the energy performance of their server equipment, enabling them to make informed decisions on procurement, deployment, and operational practices to optimize energy usage and reduce operational costs.

IT Equipment Energy Efficiency for Servers (ITEEsv)

Calculation formula:

Components

SMPEi – max performance

SMPOi – max power

Measurement points:

Server performance metrics: These are collected through benchmarking tools that measure the computational performance of servers at peak operation or from server specification sheets.

Power consumption data: This is measured directly from the power supply units of the servers or via intelligent power distribution units (PDUs) that monitor the energy consumed by each server.

Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software: This software integrates both performance and power usage data to calculate the ITEEsv metric, providing a comprehensive view of server energy efficiency.

Actionable insights

This metric should be used to understand the amount of power being consumed by a server in order to process a given workload. The intention of this metric is therefore to allow operators and purchasers of processing equipment to procure and use that equipment with offers the best performance for the lowest power consumption. If used correctly this metric in turn will reduce the overall power demand of a data center and therefore the overall environmental footprint.
